Master Angler & State Records
The year 2000 marked the 27th 'birthday' of Michigan's highly successful Master Angler Program. Launched in 1973 to better recognize anglers who catch unusually large fish, the Master Angler program began with just 19 species of fish eligible to win distinctive Master Angler shoulder patches. Today, more than a quarter-century later, that program has expanded to include 52 various species for which anglers may compete for honors.

Boating accident statistics compiled by the U.S. Coast Guard indicate that 80 percent of the people who drown in a boating or water accident would be alive today if they had been wearing a personal flotation device, or a life jacket, at the time of the accident.

Michigan DNR - Scientific or cultural collectors permit
To apply for a cultural or scientific permit, print the form and follow the instructions for completion. NOTE: Processing time for completed applications received in the DNR Fisheries Division office in Lansing is approximately one month. Incomplete applications will be returned. Fisheries Division will not accept a fax copy of the completed application.

Michigan DNR Weather Information
According to the Michigan Department of State Police and the National Weather Service, Michigan experienced 11 tornadoes, numerous flood events and thunderstorms that damaged or destroyed property. In April 2002, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan experienced a major flood event resulting in over $7 million in damages. Accordingly, the week of March 16-22, 2003 has been declared as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Michigan.
